Alatina alata is a slender, oceanic box jellyfish best known for a remarkable habit: in some locations, adults gather near shore on a predictable schedule around the lunar cycle. Those events have given researchers rare access to an animal that otherwise spends much of its life beyond easy observation.
Appearance
The bell is taller than it is wide, with one tentacle emerging from each corner. Its transparent body can be almost invisible against open water. Fine anatomical features and DNA are needed to separate Alatina species and historical names reliably.
Lunar spawning aggregations
Well-studied populations have appeared close to shore on nights linked to a particular moon phase, allowing observation of spawning and collection. This does not mean every Alatina population follows an identical date, or that a moon calendar alone predicts sting risk at an unfamiliar beach.
Range and taxonomic caution
Alatina has been reported widely in tropical and subtropical waters, including Hawaii and the Caribbean. Older records may use different combinations of names, and wide distributions deserve molecular checking. We treat a locality as verified only when it is supported by current taxonomic work.
Stings
Contact can be painful and may require medical assessment, particularly if symptoms extend beyond the skin. Severity varies with exposure and individual response. Do not deliberately enter an aggregation or handle stranded animals.

Alatina names have changed as anatomy and DNA clarified relationships among widely separated populations. A seemingly global distribution may combine true connectivity with older broad identifications. Verified locality claims should use current nomenclature and voucher-linked evidence.
What happens during an aggregation
Mature adults move near shore within a repeatable light regime, increasing the chance that reproductive material meets in a vast ocean. These events make an otherwise difficult offshore animal accessible to researchers. They also create localized periods of greater swimmer exposure.
From calendar to biology
The useful variable is not simply a full-moon icon. Work in Hawaii has examined the interval of darkness between twilight and moonrise, reproductive maturation and repeated shore arrivals. The result is a strong local pattern, not a universal cubozoan calendar.
Identification limits
A tall bell and four fine tentacles support an Alatina-like identification, but fine anatomy and DNA may be required to separate species. Images should include the whole bell, pedalia and locality information.
