Box jellyfish range from very small species to large animals with a bell around 30 cm wide and tentacles extending several metres. Always attach a size claim to a species and say whether it describes the bell or the tentacles.

Size of the Australian box jellyfish

For Chironex fleckeri, the Australian Museum gives a bell size of up to 30 cm and tentacles up to 3 m. Adults can have multiple tentacles on each of four corner pedalia. The transparent bell can be hard to see even when the animal is large.

Small box jellyfish

Some cubozoans have bells only a few centimetres wide or smaller. Several species capable of causing Irukandji syndrome are much smaller than C. fleckeri and may have just one fine tentacle at each corner. Small size does not automatically mean low medical risk.

Why measurements vary

  • Tentacles contract and stretch, so maximum length is an estimate.
  • Juveniles and adults differ substantially.
  • Preserved specimens can shrink or distort.

Does a larger jellyfish mean a worse sting?

Not by itself. Severity depends on species, tentacle contact, exposed skin, body size and speed of rescue. A large contact area with a dangerous species is a medical emergency, but a tiny species can also cause a severe systemic syndrome.

Bell size and tentacle length measure different things

Bell width or height is relatively repeatable when a fresh animal is photographed with a scale. Tentacles stretch, contract, break and become nearly invisible, making a maximum length much less stable. A useful record states which dimension was measured and how.

Growth changes diet and risk

Juvenile C. fleckeri feed heavily on small crustaceans; larger animals add fish as tentacles and venom delivery develop. Medical risk also changes with the area of contact, not bell size alone.

Why preserved specimens differ

  • Fixatives can shrink or stiffen the bell.
  • Tentacles may contract or detach.
  • Soft internal structures deform.
  • A flat photograph can hide depth and curvature.

How to estimate safely

Never approach or touch an animal to measure it. From a safe position, photograph it beside a fixed environmental feature only if that feature is already present. Record whether the estimate refers to bell width, bell height or visible tentacle length.
